Smashing Pumpkins - MCIS Demos I (13) **A thir13en Remaster**

**Remastered** by thir13en

My FAQ: http://zombtracker.the-zomb.com/forums.php?action=viewtopic&topicid=1232

Smashing Pumpkins
Mellon Collie Demos I
1996
Moonraker 123 CDR

I probably wouldn't have bothered with this but there are a few people I won't say no to, ognetty being one of those (and just about anybody on our fine staff here at the Zomb, for that matter). So blame him for this, if you choose to do so...

After listening to the one that circulates as "Billy's Home Demos", I went and grabbed this disc that I got back in 1996, from the so-called label of Moonraker, which put out this CDR called "The Mellon Collie Demos". Smartly, and even before the offical release of the Tonight Tonight single, they left off the versions of songs that would later be officially released on that single, and in the box set "The Aeroplane Flies High". The disc I had ended with an interview that's been omitted, and the one song that appeared on "BHS" but wasn't on my disc, Marquis De Spades, has been added to the end.

Comparitvely, this disc sounded far superior to the aforementioned "BHD's" and scoped out as a much more likely lossless source. Though still somewhat damaged in it's journey to this disc, it's still worthy of a work-over, but barely.

They were rough to begin with, and as I've warned you all before, though I can improve certain things in these remasters, I can also expose the weaknesses that much more as well, but the difference of bad vs. good is still on the profitable side.

NOTE: This will mark my turn to APE files. I've been a proponent of this compression scheme for a number of years now. It's a more musical compresser that was developed specifically for audio. It's decompressors for Winamp, WMP, Foobar, etc. sound better, and it can compress very close if not right into a 2-1 ratio. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

So, here they are, more of Billy's home madness...

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Lily
To Forgive
**Remastered** by thir13en

Billy's Gravity Demos get the thir13en treatment. Bigger, badder, better...the way they should be heard.

So many excellent instrumentals and some great ideas that weren't totally fleshed out, but the inner workings of a great band and it's wonderous music is pleasantly displayed none-the-less. Must have material for any true Pumpkins fan, it's worth many repeated listens.
Smashing Pumpkins - Mashed Potatoes (13) - *DISC 5 of 5* *A thir13en Remaster*

*A thir13en Production*

Smashing Pumpkins

"Mashed Potatoes"

I always knew I'd do the whole thing one day, it was just a matter of time. But, there is a slight catch; These will be appearing one disc at a time over the course of the next 10 days, working up to Xmas eve...so Happy Holidays!

It'll be set up so the whole thing will download into the one directory, when completed all 77 songs will be in order, in one folder.

I'd like to thank whoever uploaded this to alt.binaries.Smash-Pumpkins 4 years ago, that's where I got this source, and have enjoyed being able to hear it ever since.

The tech:

Each song is from a different source, origin, ambience...realm. So working on this is a bitch. Certain songs have been done here and there for various other thir13en'd compilations, like the "Off Their Rawkers" collections and the "Gish Live" project. But I've redone everything for this specific collection as it will help it retain a stable integrity across the five discs.

About the only thing that seems prevelant on every tune is an overwhelming boomy bottom-end and an unbalanced stereo image, sometimes left, sometimes right, but always an unnatural tilt. And the varied spectrum and flow of volumes from song to song is quite staggered. My ultimate goal, as always, is to create a more controlled environment for the collection as a whole, and therefore enjoy the easy playing of the discs without the need to alter each song in playback.

The warning:

If you're one that will enjoy this, then please do so. That's why it exists.

If you're one of those few, yet loud and bitter angst-ridden types that doesn't like me doing this...waaaaah, waaaaah, waaaah,...that's just too bad. You can feel free to bombard me with your hatred as I've grown to enjoy knowing how much this pisses you off. But seriously dudes, it's just a bunch of songs, you need to get out more.

Happy Fucking Valentines
Tristessa (live 92)
There It Goes (demo 88)
With You (demo 89)

Smashing Pumpkins - Mashed Potatoes (13) - *DISC 1 of 5* *A thir13en Remaster*

Slightly better sound and more complete than the LSD release of this date (Live In Japan box sets), and without the metallic sound from overamplification that completely ruined the offering by Wendy (Live Peace In Hiroshima). The definitive version IMHO, I think you will agree.
SEATTLE (October 16, 2000) — EMP, the museum that drew its inspiration from Jimi Hendrix’s musical imagination and is dedicated to inspiring creativity and innovation through music, is proud to present the Seattle debut of "A Magic Science: Celebrating Jimi Hendrix" to kick off EMP's semi-annual Innovator Series.

"I'm working on music to be completely, utterly a magic science." — Jimi Hendrix

Premiering first at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on October 20, A Magic Science, addresses the oft-asked question of what Jimi Hendrix might have been doing had he not died so young. Hendrix, the mythic guitarist and composer behind the albums Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love and Electric Ladyland, was exploring rock-jazz fusion ideas before his death on September 18, 1970. He was one week away from recording with renowned arranger Gil Evans (who worked with Miles Davis on Sketches of Spain and Porgy and Bess). In 1974 Evans unveiled his ingenious arrangements of Hendrix songs at Carnegie Hall as part of the New York Jazz Repertory Company’s season and standout versions of Hendrix classics like "Castles Made of Sand" and "Little Wing" were performed.

A Magic Science is a contemporary, expanded reprise of that famous Evans-arranged concert. The production will feature funk/jazz/rock masters Medeski Martin & Wood and the jazz luminaries of The Gil Evans Orchestra, now conducted by Gil’s son Miles Evans. These artists are joined by Vernon Reid and Chris Whitley, two of the most innovative guitarists making music today. In addition, the evening will feature the scratching techniques of one of the world’s premiere DJs, DJ Logic on turntables and Marc Anthony Thompson and Sandra St. Victor on vocals. Glenn McKay, the famed lighting designer for Jefferson Airplane and the Monterey Pop Festival, will create his trademark liquid color landscapes along with new digitized, brilliantly colored projected images, completing this fantastical tribute to an American guitar legend.

EMP’s first Innovators Series begins on the eve of Jimi Hendrix’s fifty-eighth birthday with Magic Science and continues with a week- long celebration featuring workshops, films, artist presentations, and live performances dedicated to exploring Jimi’s musical legacy.

"Our goal is to make EMP the vanguard music institution in the world. The program we have put together embraces our mission, featuring an artist who is known for changing the way we embrace rock ‘n’ roll, and music in general," said Bob Santelli, EMP’s deputy director of public programs. "We’re excited to be able to present such a stellar production along with a week of educational events that examine Jimi’s incredible contributions to American popular music."

EMP's premiere Innovator Series takes place Nov. 26-Dec. 2, 2000. A complete schedule of other events and ticket information to follow.

About Experience Music Project
Dedicated to exploring creativity and innovation in American popular music, EMP is a new kind of museum that strives to capture and reflect the essence of rock ‘n’ roll, its roots in jazz, soul, gospel, country and the blues, as well as rock music’s influence on hip-hop, punk and other recent genres. A total sensory experience awaits visitors inside EMP’s dynamic structure. Patrons can make their own music, see and learn about rare artifacts and memorabilia from EMP's collection of more than 80,000 items, explore various musical milestones within unique interpretive exhibits, and discover the power and joy of music in all its forms. Gehry, the 140,000-square-foot multi-colored and "swoopy" museum rises up in the heart of the city at Seattle Center and provides visitors a musical experience unparalleled anywhere in the world. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, EMP opened on June 23, 2000 and is online at www.emplive.com.
EMP Explores the Genius of Jimi Hendrix with the Inaugural Innovators Series, Nov. 26-Dec. 2
Schedule includes live music performances, exclusive film showings and special guests

Experience Music Project today announces the final line-up for its inaugural EMP Innovators Series, a semi-annual program designed to explore the music and legacy of an artist who has significantly changed the course or direction of popular music. The first innovators week examines the inspiring creativity and musical innovations of Jimi Hendrix and runs Sunday, November 26 through Saturday, December 2.
“Hendrix was an artist who dramatically affected rock guitar by exploring sonic distortion and incorporating jazz and blues,” said Bob Santelli, EMP’s deputy director of public programming. “Hendrix almost single-handedly created heavy metal, jazz-fusion and made important contributions to the evolution of funk. This month he would have celebrated his 58th birthday.”

The fall 2000 EMP Innovators Series begins on the eve of Hendrix’s birthday with A Magic Science: Celebrating Jimi Hendrix, a live performance at Benaroya Hall featuring Medeski Martin & Wood, Miles Evans with The Gil Evans Orchestra, Vernon Reid, Chris Whitley and others. The series continues with a variety of activities featuring workshops, exclusive films, presentations and live performances all dedicated to exploring Jimi’s musical legacy.
This is the only decent-sounding bootleg of the short-lived "Bongo Fury" band. The sound could be an A+ if it wasn't a bit distorted and sibilant. Unfortunately the show is incomplete. (The rest exists but has not been circulated.) Here it is in much better quality than the bootlegs. This show was a few days after the Austin shows where "Bongo Fury" was recorded. Jimmy Carl Black makes an exciting guest appearance on the rarely-performed "You're So Fine" and "Lonely Lonely Nights". I don't know if I like Frank's guitar tone here - it is very fuzzy. Still, a highly enjoyable performance. George Duke is in great form too. - J

*a thir13en Remaster*

The "album" version, lovingly declicked and mischievously tinkered, bleeding loud 'n rocking proud.

**
Each nasty snap, crackle and pop was sought, targeted and eliminated by hand. At difficult spots, a second process involving automated plug-in thresholds helped to further control the wave-form anamolies.

Why do it by hand rather than a "cleaning" plug-in? Because although the count of pops was easily near or just over a hundred, all totaled those noises add up to less than 1 second of actual audio. Processing everything would cut off natural peaks of the drums, vocal stabs and guitar attacks, causing possible "stuttering" among other unwanted nuances. This way those stay pure.

The secondary process was used on about 10% of the pops, where the hand-pasted fix didn't work or needed more help. It involves strapping the Waves X-Click plug-in to the master output, then setting the de-click threshold to kick in precisely at the bad pop spots. It safely kills anything left.

On a few occaisions, the pops were generated by thumps in the recording. The pops are gone, but the thumps remain. I don't recall exactly all of them, but there's at least 3 obivous spots where this occurs.
**

$$
The mischief begins with some light de-hiss, sound-printed from the surface noise. Then EQ tweaks and channel balancing (Waves ReQ), the mastering compression (Waves R-comp), the low-end warmth and detail of the BBE, and the finishing touches with the Waves L3. It's slammin'. Hard.
$$

Sources used were the single file whole-sides. No edits (except for the 46 seconds of nothing on the front end of side 1, and 20 some seconds of nothing at the end of side 2).

Splits were made at what seemed the most reasonable point pertaining to each song.

Rock out, peace on,

10. She Says
11. Sweet Sweet

This session resulted in a tape of Siamese Dream demos submitted to Virgin Records in 1992, called: "Quiet and Other Songs: A Collection of Songs for Album II."
Doorstep is an early version of Meladori Magpie and featured a full-band arrangement.
Suicide Kiss evolved into Geek USA.
Hello Kitty Kat was at this time simply titled Kitty Kat.
Set the Ray to Jerry is an early version of the song, full band electric, with a faster tempo and more aggresive sound.

Smashing Pumpkins - Reel Time Sessions [STU] (13) *A thir13en Remaster*

**Remastered** by thir13en

Smashing Pumpkins
Reel Time Sessions

Okay you Pumpkin heads, I know it's been a while since I did something significant in the SP world, so I offer this. I've done parts here and there, but I've heard many requests for the whole thing. Now it's fresh!

Some of these were really nice recordings and decent versions of some cool tunes. The mixes are rough and probably thrown together in a rather efficient (translation: money saving) procedure. Balance was an issue on nearly every song, and each one was predictable to be either heavy left or heavy right. And many songs had huge leaps in disparity between certain instruments and ultimate peak levels.

But what was interesting was to see how they reacted to the mastering process. In A-B comps, the midrange, or real meat of the guitars just jumped out on the remaster. So much so that I would often go through my settings to see if anything was adding that in an overzealous artifical manner. I found nothing really, as I hardly boosted the mid's at all. It's just that when I did the basic mastering compression and maximization, that's what wanted to really jump out, and my ears just loved it. Made quite a difference in the power and emotion of many of the songs.

As tempting as it was to edit out the giggling, the banter, the noisy intro-outro of songs, etc, I decided to leave it alone, but that was after I had already given "Fat Man Blues (abandoned)" it's own track, so that edit remains an anomaly to this version.
Notes from Teddy:
There were 2 postings of 1/23/70 when it first got circulated all
those months ago. I posted 1/23/70 a few hours after someone else
(I forget who) posted the same. The one I posted may have had the
track marks slightly different then the other post? For this
updated Lovelight, I spliced in the original (more then a few
seconds at the start to fit) WITHOUT any change to the start of
Lovelight... Hence, you will not be able to tell where the
splice is and the track markers and transition are dead on...

To fit on 2 CDs:

I opted to put Dark Star thru Lovelight on CD2. Or I guess one
could start the Drums on CD2? The entire jam from Cryptical thru
Lovelight will NOT fit on even an 80 min. CDR...

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Additional minor editing by Charlie Connor 6/28/03 as follows:
gd70-01-23t08-09 - 1 second of silence between tracks removed
using Steinberg's Wavelab 3

Sector boundaries corrected using shntool.
Flac encoding notes:
All processing with Trader's Little Helper
Shn > Flac ( level 8 )
Flac - st5 generated and matched to Shn st5

Tagging notes:
Show information is embedded within the header of each flac file.
It will display on any player capable of directly playing flac
files. If converted to wav during processing, all tags will be
stripped, however audio data will remain unaffected. If you must
transcode to a lossy format, do so directly Flac > Lossy.
Use st5 to validate audio integrity.
Md5 values will change if tagging is altered.
